We’re happy to share with you a full Chapter from the final Broken Tales book: Chapter 4 - Dark Presences.
28 pages of NPCs you can drop in any of the book Scenarios, use as hooks for your adventures, or use to connect Scenarios in a Campaign. The Chapter also includes all the rules to create your own (Gifts rules are in another Chapter, we'll help with those).
Please keep in mind that this is a BETA, meaning: it’s the final content and layout of the book, but it still needs a final pass for typos and other improvements. So if you notice something wrong, please come to our Discord server and let us know – we still have plenty of time to fix it.
Closer to printing, we will ask for your help on the complete book file to directly comment on it. As you can imagine, 1900 pairs of eyeballs 👀 on the files are better than anything we can achieve internally. For now, any feedback you will provide on Discord will be noted and implemented if it makes sense.
The Broken Tales subreddit
This is the surprise a few proactive members of the Broken Tales community (thank you!), and I have been working on for a while: now that you have a few rules to play with, we want to see what you come up with! Starting with a Dark Presence should ease you in without an issue.
This subreddit is focused on content created by the community, meaning YOU. We already have guidelines on how to submit the material and plenty of examples of Dark Presences, Hunters, and even fan-made Scenarios. A few names to tease you: The Animated Husk, Maria the Sentinel, Death and Misery, The Crawlers…
We’re super excited to see your submissions and hear your feedback on the initiative. Please remember that for practical matters and questions on the game (release, where to buy, how rules work), Discord is still the best place to ask.

Il Capitolo include anche le regole per creare le vostre Oscure Presenze personalizzate (le regole per i Doni sono in un altro Capitolo, quando servirà vi daremo una mano).
Tenete a mente che questo è un file BETA, ovvero: sono i contenuti e l’impaginazione definitiva, ma manca un passaggio finale di “pulitura” per refusi e altri miglioramenti. Se notate qualcosa, venite sul nostro server Discord a farcelo notare. Abbiamo ancora tempo per risolvere eventuali problemini.
Prima di andare in stampa vi chiederemo aiuto sul file completo del libro, dove potrete commentare direttamente. Come è facile immaginare, 1900 paia di occhi 👀 sui file sono meglio di qualsiasi passaggio noi si possa fare internamente. Il subreddit di Broken Tales
Questa è la sorpresa su cui una serie di membri proattivi della community di Broken Tales (grazie!) e io abbiamo lavorato ultimamente: adesso che avete delle regole con cui divertirvi, vogliamo vedere cosa riuscite a creare! Iniziare con una Oscura Presenza è un modo semplice per prendere confidenza con le regole di “rottura”.
Una nota: il subreddit è pensato in Inglese, e per il momento non stiamo considerando una community mista. Sono rare su reddit e generalmente non funzionano. Se avete bisogno di supporto linguistico, passate prima per Discord e valuteremo il da farsi.
Il subreddit è focalizzato sui contenuti della community, ovvero VOI. Abbiamo delle linee guida per mandare il materiale e un sacco di esempi di Oscure Presenze, Cacciatori e anche Scenari. Qualche nome per solleticarvi: The Animated Husk, Maria the Sentinel, Death and Misery, The Crawlers…
Non vediamo l’ora di vedere come ci manderete e sentire il vostro feedback sull’iniziativa. Ricordatevi che per questioni pratiche (uscita del gioco, dove comprarlo, spiegazioni delle regole), Discord è il posto giusto dove chiedere.

This will be the last update on Backerkit payments, I swear (“Liar! LIAR!” the shadows scream as I write an obvious falsehood). In the future, if there are still outstanding payment issues, please reach out to me directly with a message here on Kickstarter, or find me on our Discord server, and I’ll assist you. No matter the channel you pick, I’m the guy on the other side. Bwhahaha!
That said: the other day we charged credit cards for shipping and additional articles. A few of you are seeing a “Card Errored” message. That means one of three things: missing funds, you need to authorize the purchase with your bank, or the card has expired.
All of these problems are fixable, but you should be proactive about it – I can’t help you there. If you already took action: great! We’ll try to charge the cards again at weekly intervals and your order will be confirmed then.
Please note that from now on, all rewards will be sent only to backers whose Backerkit survey is in order and paid in full. Reach out if you need assistance, and remember that orders are final either way.

Come risolvere i problemi di pagamento
Prometto che questo sarà l'ultimo update sui pagamenti di Backerkit (“Bugiardo! BUGIARDO!” urlano le ombre della mia stanza mentre scrivo una evidente menzogna). In futuro, per problemi di pagamento, contattatemi con un messaggio qui su Kickstarter o venite sul nostro server Discord, e cercherò di aiutarvi. Non importa il canale che sceglierete, a rispondere sarò sempre io. Bwhahaha!
Detto questo: l’altro giorno abbiamo scalato i fondi dalle carte di credito per le spese di spedizione e gli articoli che avete aggiunto al vostro ordine da Backerkit. Alcuni hanno ricevuto il messaggio “Card Errored”. Questo vuol dire una di tre cose: la carta non ha fondi a sufficienza, dovete autorizzare l’acquisto tramite la vostra banca, o la vostra carta è scaduta.
Tutti questi problemi sono risolvibili, ma dovete essere proattivi – non vi posso aiutare con questa faccenda. Se avete già risolto: benissimo! Riproveremo a scalare i fondi a intervalli settimanali e l’ordine sarà quindi confermato.
Ricordatevi che da ora in avanti le ricompense saranno mandate solo ai backer che hanno completato il sondaggio Backerkit e saldato il dovuto. Se avete bisogno di supporto fatecelo sapere, ma ricordatevi che gli ordini sono considerati finali a questo punto, che la situazione venga risolta o meno.
La prima parte de La Quiete di Stegeborg in modalità OSR
Qualche giorno fa abbiamo giocato con il nostro autore matto e disperatissimo Alberto Tronchi la prima parte de La Quiete di Stegeborg, lo Scenario contenuto in The Broken Ones e ispirato a La Bella Addormentata. Ci abbiamo giocato in modalità OSR, mettendo insieme un gruppo di deboli umani alle prese con le Fiabe Spezzate… Questa prima parte include anche la creazione dei personaggi, per darvi un’idea di quello che vi aspetta.

Last Call for the Pledge Manager
Both the Pledge Manager and the Late Pledge close on January 10th. This is what will happen:
On January 8th you'll receive a final notice from Backerkit for last-minute changes. If your order is fine, you can ignore it.
On January 10th (end of the day, I'll be flexible with timezones) surveys will be locked.
Cards will be charged on January 12th, just in case you need to reach out for support.
This is the last call to:
Check that you’re happy with your order, add or remove articles
Check that your payment info is correct
Mention to your friends they still have a few days to get a copy of Broken Tales and The Broken Ones (link to the Late Pledge)
If you’re using a debit card, please make sure your account is funded. If something goes wrong, Backerkit will warn you, but let’s try to minimize potential issues.
After January 10, orders are final, and no further changes will be possible.
With one exception: you will still be able to change your shipping address until closer to shipping (we’ll warn you before addresses will be locked down).
The first community-made Scenario, Bloodbound, hit the table and was recorded for the rest of you to enjoy – consider it a small preview of that “community solution to submit homemade Broken Tales materials” I mentioned some updates ago. More on that soonish. Special thanks to Nazeleternel, Happy, Jon_Kun, Shannanigans, and Lord Smork from our Discord server.
Follow morally ambiguous Hunters as they attempt to investigate the recent death spike afflicting a small French village. Can they unravel the mysteries of the Bloodbound, and will they find a way to make the right choice when facing the truth?
The Village, playing Broken Tales in OSR mode as a peasant
One of the coolest things contained in The Broken Ones, Broken Tales’ first expansion (you can still add it to your order from here), is an OSR mode that allows you to play as a peasant. We called it The Village because we all know what happens in villages, don't we? Our playtesters think it’s a blast, so we can’t wait for you to try it out. I asked Alberto to present it in his words, and here’s what he sent me:
The Village is a variant of Broken Tales where ordinary people are the protagonists. For some reason, they have crossed paths with the Broken Tales. Forever stained by this dark encounter, these humans can no longer live an everyday existence, falling into a spiral of doubt and morbose attraction to the unknown that will push them to investigate the mysteries of Broken Europe.
The Village was designed with a strong OSR (Old School Renaissance) vibe in mind. OSR is a "game philosophy" movement that emphasizes groups of unheroic protagonists, more often than not poor desperate people, trying to survive in a dangerous and hostile world.
You will play the same Scenarios faced by the Hunters of the Order, but the nature of the protagonists will lead to a profoundly different experience.
Characters will be created starting from a role, representing many borderline professions and life situations of eighteen-century Europe. We go from Renegade Doctor to Deserter, fromInfested toMad Artist(there are plenty more). Each role grants a unique Gift, equipment, and bonds to quickly create your character.
The Village introduces special rules, such as the fear that Broken Tales can instill on humans, and a different scale of action resolution, to better emphasize human frailty compared to supernatural creatures.
Tips and guidelines will help players approach the Scenarios as fragile creatures which can perish at every misstep.
The Village allows playing each Scenario from a totally different perspective and will add hours and hours of gameplay to your overall Broken Tales experience!

Sia il Pledge Manager che il Late Pledge chiudono il 10 Gennaio. Questo è quello che accadrà in ordine:
L'8 Gennaio riceverete un avviso finale da Backerkit per cambi dell'ultimo minuto. Se il vostro ordine è a posto, potete ignorarlo.
Il 10 Gennaio, a fine giornata, gli ordini verranno chiusi.
I fondi dovuti verranno scalati dallecarteil 12 Gennaio, nel caso vi servissero un paio di giorni extra per chiedere supporto.
Questa è l’ultima occasione per:

Oggi vi presento la prima parte di Resterò per Sempre con Te, lo Scenario ispirato a Il Principe Felice di Oscar Wilde, contenuto in The Broken Ones. Rigrazio Serrafollower95 e Boz the writer per aver partecipato al playtest con me.
Ostromir Malý, reggente Boemo di Praga dopo l’assedio della città ad opera di Federico II di Prussia, manda una richiesta urgentissima all’Ordine poiché da alcuni giorni nella città stremata si stanno consumando alcuni omicidi che sembrano perpetrati dalla stessa mano. Le vittime fanno parte dell’aristocrazia incaricata di ricostruire la città dopo l’assedio, e sono state ritrovate senza un pezzo di corpo. Il filo rosso che accomuna gli assalti è la frase “Resterò per sempre con te”, scritta sui muri delle stanze dove si consuma questa inumana violenza…
Il Villaggio, giocare Broken Tales in modalità OSR con gli umani
Una delle cose più interessanti che includeremo in The Broken Ones, la prima espansione di Broken Tales (potete ancora aggiungerla al vostro ordine da qui) è la modalità OSR che vi permette di giocare nei panni di comuni umani. L’abbiamo chiamata Il Villaggio, perché lo sanno tutti quello che succede nei villaggi, o no? I nostri playtester pensano sia una figata, e non vediamo l’ora di consegnarvela. Ho chiesto ad Alberto di presentarla:
Il Villaggio è una variante di Broken Tales che si concentra su persone comuni che per qualche motivo hanno incrociato sul loro sentiero le Fiabe Spezzate. Segnati da questo incontro oscuro, non possono più vivere un’esistenza normale, precipitando in una spirale di dubbio e attrazione verso l’ignoto che li spingerà a indagare sui misteri dell’Europa Spezzata.
Il Villaggio è pensato per un gioco dalle spiccate atmosfere OSR (Old School Renaissance), una filosofia di gioco che mette in risalto gruppi di protagonisti poco eroici, più spesso dei poveri disperati, che tentano di sopravvivere in un mondo pericoloso e ostile. Si giocheranno gli stessi Scenari che affrontano i Cacciatori dell’Ordine, ma la diversa natura dei protagonisti porterà a un’esperienza profondamente diversa.
I personaggi verranno creati partendo da un ruolo, che rappresenta uno dei tanti mestieri o condizioni borderline nell’Europa del diciottesimo secolo. Si passa dal Medico Rinnegato al Disertore, senza tralasciare ruoli particolari come l’Appestato o l’Artista Folle.Ce ne sono, ovviamente, parecchi altri. Ogni ruolo concede un Dono unico e gli equipaggiamenti e legami con cui creare velocemente il proprio personaggio.
Il Villaggio introduce alcune regole speciali, come la paura che le Fiabe Spezzate possono incutere e una diversa scala di risoluzione delle azioni, per meglio sottolineare la fragilità umana in confronto a creature sovrannaturali.
Consigli e direttive di gioco aiuteranno i giocatori ad approcciare gli Scenari non più da eroi, ma come fragili comparse che possono perire a ogni passo falso.
Un modo per vivere ogni Scenario da una prospettiva totalmente differente, che aggiungerà ore e ore alle vostre sessioni di Broken Tales!

Hey Broken Ones,
Apologies if I keep sending unscheduled updates. I have two news today:
When I asked you to vote Broken Tales as the Most Anticipated RPG of 2022 on EnWorld, I got confused about the deadline. It turns out it was… yesterday.
The results are in. Not only we made it to the Top 10, but WE CAME IN SECOND, just behind Blade Runner. You know, that game based on one of the most revered sci-fi IPs in history?
When I saw the tweet last night I couldn’t believe my eyes. Somewhat, somehow, you helped us climb a list composed of killer IPs and games made by both well-established and extremely talented teams.
From all of us, THANK YOU. This result is a testament to both what we’re doing and how active a community has gathered around it. Mark my words, we will not disappoint.
While I don’t expect this result to move mountains, getting on that list DOES place us on the map of upcoming cool RPGs, and will help more people learn about Broken Tales. At the very least, someone will wonder “What the heck is Broken Tales?” And that’s good enough for us.
Like the Lannisters, we always pay our debts, so here’s what we'll do to celebrate:
We’ll add a brand new Treasure to the Order’s Treasury, The Newcomer’s Crown, based on this story from the Arthurian Myth. We think that a baby with a crown is a good metaphor for what just happened.
The Newcomer’s Crown will be included in all copies of The Broken Ones, but also distributed separately as PDF, for those of you who backed for the Core Book only.
Chiedo venia che continuo a mandarvi aggiornamenti non previsti. Oggi ho due notizie:
Quando vi ho chiesto di votare per Broken Tales come GdR più atteso del 2022 su EnWorld, ho fatto casino con le date. In sostanza, la deadline era… ieri.
Ci sono già i risultati. Non solo siamo entrati in Top 10, ma SIAMO ARRIVATI SECONDI, subito dopo Blade Runner. Avete presente il gioco basato su una delle proprietà intellettuali di fantascienza più venerate del mondo?
Quando l’ho visto, ieri sera, non credevo ai miei occhi. In qualche modo, per qualche motivo, ci avete aiutato a scalare una lista composta da proprietà intellettuali mostruose e giochi fatti da team eccezionali e già molto noti.
Da tutti noi, GRAZIE. Questo risultato è un riconoscimento a quello che stiamo facendo ma anche al fermento della community che si è creata attorno a Broken Tales. Non vi deluderemo.
Sebbene non mi aspetti che questo risultato possa cambiare le cose drasticamente, entrare in quella lista ci posiziona sulla mappa degli RPG più interessanti in arrivo, e aiuterà alcuni giocatori a scoprire Broken Tales. Male che vada, qualcuno si chiederà “Ma che cavolo è sto Broken Tales?” E questo è già un bel risultato.
Come i Lannister, anche noi paghiamo sempre i nostri debiti, quindi questo è quello che faremo per celebrare:
Aggiungeremo un nuovo tesoro alla Tesoreria dell’Ordine, La Corona del Nuovo Arrivato, basata su questa storia del mito Arturiano. L’idea di un bambino misterioso con una corona ci sembrava perfettamente a tema con quello che è appena successo.
La Corona del Nuovo Arrivato sarà inclusa in tutte le copie di The Broken Ones, ma anche distribuita separatamente come PDF, per coloro che hanno acquistato solo il Libro Base.
Noi ci risentiamo fra pochi giorni con un “vero update”.

I wasn’t planning to send an update before January 6th but this morning we learned that we made the list of candidates for Most Anticipated RPG of 2022 on EnWorld, the hobby website that organizes the ENNIES.
Someone suggested our name and… we’re in. First of all, to our benefactor: thank you!
Second…let's just do it!
The competition is fierce: we’re on the same list with Blade Runner, Avatar, Cy-Börg, and a bunch of other cool games. The good news is that you can vote up to 3 games. If one of those would be Broken Tales, you’d make us very, very happy.
So happy, in fact, that if we make it to the Top 10 we’ll celebrate with a little thematic gift for all backers.
