Hey Broken Ones,

Apologies if I keep sending unscheduled updates. I have two news today:

1. When I asked you to vote Broken Tales as the Most Anticipated RPG of 2022 on EnWorld, I got confused about the deadline. It turns out it was… yesterday.
2. The results are in. Not only we made it to the Top 10, but WE CAME IN SECOND, just behind Blade Runner. You know, that game based on one of the most revered sci-fi IPs in history?
    

When I saw the tweet last night I couldn’t believe my eyes. Somewhat, somehow, you helped us climb a list composed of killer IPs and games made by both well-established and extremely talented teams.

From all of us, THANK YOU. This result is a testament to both what we’re doing and how active a community has gathered around it. Mark my words, we will not disappoint.

While I don’t expect this result to move mountains, getting on that list DOES place us on the map of upcoming cool RPGs, and will help more people learn about Broken Tales. At the very least, someone will wonder “What the heck is Broken Tales?” And that’s good enough for us.

Like the Lannisters, we always pay our debts, so here’s what we'll do to celebrate:

• We’ll add a brand new Treasure to the Order’s Treasury, The Newcomer’s Crown, based on this story from the Arthurian Myth. We think that a baby with a crown is a good metaphor for what just happened.
• The Newcomer’s Crown will be included in all copies of The Broken Ones, but also distributed separately as PDF, for those of you who backed for the Core Book only.

Chiedo venia che continuo a mandarvi aggiornamenti non previsti. Oggi ho due notizie:

1. Quando vi ho chiesto di votare per Broken Tales come GdR più atteso del 2022 su EnWorld, ho fatto casino con le date. In sostanza, la deadline era… ieri.
2. Ci sono già i risultati. Non solo siamo entrati in Top 10, ma SIAMO ARRIVATI SECONDI, subito dopo Blade Runner. Avete presente il gioco basato su una delle proprietà intellettuali di fantascienza più venerate del mondo?
    

Quando l’ho visto, ieri sera, non credevo ai miei occhi. In qualche modo, per qualche motivo, ci avete aiutato a scalare una lista composta da proprietà intellettuali mostruose e giochi fatti da team eccezionali e già molto noti.

Da tutti noi, GRAZIE. Questo risultato è un riconoscimento a quello che stiamo facendo ma anche al fermento della community che si è creata attorno a Broken Tales. Non vi deluderemo.

Sebbene non mi aspetti che questo risultato possa cambiare le cose drasticamente, entrare in quella lista ci posiziona sulla mappa degli RPG più interessanti in arrivo, e aiuterà alcuni giocatori a scoprire Broken Tales. Male che vada, qualcuno si chiederà “Ma che cavolo è sto Broken Tales?” E questo è già un bel risultato.

Come i Lannister, anche noi paghiamo sempre i nostri debiti, quindi questo è quello che faremo per celebrare:

• Aggiungeremo un nuovo tesoro alla Tesoreria dell’Ordine, La Corona del Nuovo Arrivato, basata su questa storia del mito Arturiano. L’idea di un bambino misterioso con una corona ci sembrava perfettamente a tema con quello che è appena successo.
• La Corona del Nuovo Arrivato sarà inclusa in tutte le copie di The Broken Ones, ma anche distribuita separatamente come PDF, per coloro che hanno acquistato solo il Libro Base.
• Per saperne di più su come funzionano i Tesori, fate riferimento a questo update.

I wasn’t planning to send an update before January 6th but this morning we learned that we made the list of candidates for Most Anticipated RPG of 2022 on EnWorld, the hobby website that organizes the ENNIES.

Someone suggested our name and… we’re in. First of all, to our benefactor: thank you!

Second…let's just do it!

The competition is fierce: we’re on the same list with Blade Runner, Avatar, Cy-Börg, and a bunch of other cool games. The good news is that you can vote up to 3 games. If one of those would be Broken Tales, you’d make us very, very happy.

So happy, in fact, that if we make it to the Top 10 we’ll celebrate with a little thematic gift for all backers.

The year is almost over. And you know what, we have a little surprise for the holidays! In today’s update:

• A New Playable Scenario

A New Playable Scenario

Those who have completed the Backerkit survey will receive an email linking to Of Flesh and Wood, a new playable Scenario based on the Pinocchio fairytale.

Please note: the Scenario is 100% complete, but we’re sending out the ASHCAN version, meaning that this is not its final layout (from a production standpoint, it makes sense for us to finalize it later on). To be honest, it was supposed to be text only, but Daniel couldn’t really accept sending something out without any image. So we put a couple there anyway.

You can play Of Flesh and Wood with the Quickstart characters. If you are looking for games or players, please join our Discord server, as we suspect other people in your timezone would love to join.

If you want to see how this plays, GutPunchRP will stream a game of Of Flesh and Wood on January 8th at 6:30 pm Central (CT).

GutPunchRP is a TTRPG streaming channel dedicated to charity and diverse storytelling. They strive to foster a community that celebrates and promotes inclusivity and representation in gaming. You can learn more about their activities HERE.

In brief:

• Work on The Broken Ones is proceeding swiftly. All non-Scenario parts are complete, some are in playtesting (including Solo mode), and in general, the aim is to wrap up the expansion book by the end of January. In the next update, we'll discuss playing Broken Tales as peasants with the OSR mode The Village. You can still add The Broken Ones to your order from Backerkit.
• The Pledge Manager closes on January 10. Please check that your order and payment details are in order. Read the full instructions in our previous update.
• French speakers! We're looking to record some Broken Tales games in French. Show up on our Discord server, and we'll arrange something. Now in French: Amis francophones, nous voudrions enregistrer une ou plusieurs parties de Broken Tales en Français. Siamo alla fine dell’anno. Ma sapete cosa? Abbiamo una piccola sorpresa per le feste! Nell’update di oggi:

Un nuovo Scenario giocabile

Chi ha completato il sondaggio Backerkit riceverà una email con il link a Di Carne e Legno, un nuovo Scenario giocabile basato sulla fiaba di Pinocchio.

Nota bene: lo Scenario è completo al 100%, ma quella che vi arriverà è la cosiddetta versione ASHCAN, ovvero una versione che non ha il layout finale (da un punto di vista della produzione, ha più senso per noi finalizzare l’impaginazione successivamente). Ad essere sinceri doveva essere solo testo, ma Daniel trovava inaccettabile non mettere nemmeno una immagine. Quindi ne abbiamo incluse un paio.

Potete giocare Di Carne e Legno con i personaggi del Quickstart. Se state cercando partite o giocatori, unitevi al nostro server Discord, dove troverete sicuramente altre persone in cerca della stessa cosa.

Se volete vedere lo Scenario giocato, GutPunchRP farà uno stream di Di Carne e Legno (in inglese) l'8 Gennaio alle 18:30 (CT) – è alle 01:30 italiane, ma la partita sarà registrata.

In breve:

• Il lavoro su The Broken Ones procede a gonfie vele. Tutte le parti di regole sono complete e alcune sono in playtesting (inclusa la modalità Solo). In generale, crediamo sia possibile chiudere l’espansione per la fine di Gennaio. Nel prossimo update parleremo di come si gioca Broken Tales nei panni di deboli umani, con la modalità OSR Il Villaggio. Potete ancora aggiungere The Broken Ones al vostro ordine da Backerkit.
• Il Pledge Manager chiude il 10 Gennaio. Controllate che il vostro ordine e i dettagli di pagamento siano in ordine. Potete leggere le istruzioni complete nel nostro update precedente.

Today I want to focus on two things only:

• The Pledge Manager closes on January 10 – what does it mean for you?
• The Order’s Treasury in The Broken Ones
   

The Pledge Manager closes on January 10 – what does it mean for you?

Do you remember the Backerkit survey I’ve been begging you to double-check at pretty much every update?

The one that if you have not completed will prevent you from getting the books/PDFs of Broken Tales?
Well, this is the first official warning that we will lock surveys on January 10, 2022.

*WHAT DOES IT MEAN YOU’RE LOCKING SURVEYS?*

On January 10:

• Your order will be considered final. No more changes to what you will receive.
• We will withdraw funds from your credit card to pay for shipping expenses and any additional items you’ve added to your order. Just to make sure: so far you just indicated your payment method, but funds have not been withdrawn.
• The Late Pledge also closes on the same day! If your friends want Broken Tales and especially a printed copy of The Broken Ones or the art prints, the time has come. After January 10, they won’t be able to preorder anything for an extended period of time.
   

After January 10:

• You will still be able to change your shipping address. We will lock final shipping addresses closer to shipping (it’s still some months away).
• We will be able to send existing and future digital rewards to all backers that completed their orders. For example, if you ordered one of our older games in digital format, you’ll get it after January 10. You’ll also get previews and final files of Broken Tales as soon as they’re ready.
   

*I LIKE YOU, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?*

• Please check again that you’re happy with your order. Add or remove items as you please but do it before January 10. A few people still have not replied to the survey at all – I doubt they are reading, but we cannot grant the same shipping conditions to those missing this deadline. There, I said it, and now it's official.
• PLEASE PLEASE check that your credit card is not expired. If necessary, add funding to your account before January 10. Dealing with failed payments adds a ton of unnecessary stress to our operations.
   

If you have questions, you're welcome to ask them on our Discord server.

I will remind you another couple of times of this deadline but please make sure your order is ok – it’s really important that this process goes smoothly so we can focus on getting the game done.

The Order’s Treasury in The Broken Ones

We haven’t spoken too much about The Broken Ones so far because we were focused on completing all content for the Core Book first (check!), but here’s the first teaser of one of the sections you’ll find in Broken Tales’ first expansion (yeah I said first, wink wink).

You can still add The Broken Ones to your order from the same Backerkit survey discussed above.

In its spasmodic quest for control over the Broken Fairytales, the Order established the Treasury shortly after its foundation. In the Principality of Transylvania, the fortified church of Valea Viilor was chosen for its secret chambers, just about perfect for storing magic artifacts incomprehensible to commoners. An order of knights loyal to the Papacy guards Valea Viilor so that only the Hunters can enter its secret rooms. Often the most daring of them take one of the Treasures in use during a mission.

The Order's Treasury contains several iconic items from a wide variety of stories.

Each Treasure has a detailed background and gives the wielder a unique Gift linked to its powers. There are several ways for a Hunter to use a Treasure :

Replacing a Gift – A Hunter chooses a Treasure that will replace one of his two base Gifts and Descriptor (the Dark Ego is another matter). They will then receive the ability to use the Treasure for the Scenario's duration.

Special Reward for XP – Spending XP at the end of a Scenario to gain the Treasure permanently. The Treasure becomes an extra Gift with a Descriptor.

Mission Requirement – Some Scenarios may require the use of a specific Order's Treasure. The Storyteller may also grant a Treasure to aid a small group of Hunters, a bit like giving them the support of an allied Dark Presence. In this case, the Hunters may freely pass the Treasure within the group.

Whichever way they are used, Order's Treasures are a great addition to every Broken Tales game, especially for increasing the Hunters combo variety!

What else?

We’re working on a couple of previews of the Core Book, and we’ll share them as soon as possible. We’re trying to get the first (playable) one out by the end of the year. No promises but we should be able to make it!

Il Pledge Manager chiude il 10 gennaio – cosa vuol dire?

Vi sarete accorti che ad ogni update vi stresso per completare il sondaggio Backerit, quello che "se non lo completate non possiamo mandarvi i manuali e PDF di Broken Tales".

Questo è il primo avviso ufficiale che i sondaggi saranno chiusi il 10 Gennaio 2022.

*COSA VUOL DIRE CHE SARANNO CHIUSI?*

Il 10 Gennaio:

• Il vostro ordine sarà considerato finale. Non sarà più possibile aggiungere o rimuovere articoli.
• Ritireremo i fondi dalla vostra carta di credito per pagare spese di spedizione e articoli addizionali che avete aggiunto al vostro ordine. Per sicurezza: finora avete solo indicato il metodo di pagamento su Backerkit, ma i fondi non sono ancora stati prelevati.
• Il Late Pledge chiuderà lo stesso giorno! Se avete amici che stanno temporeggiando, è ora di notificarli. Se desiderano Broken Tales, e soprattutto una copia stampata di The Broken Ones e delle stampe artistiche, è adesso o mai più. Dopo il 10 gennaio, ci sarà un esteso periodo in cui non saranno disponibili preorder di nessun tipo, e The Broken Ones in versione fisica non potrà più essere ordinato.
   

Dopo il 10 gennaio:

• Sarete ancora in grado di cambiare l’indirizzo di spedizione. Gli indirizzi verranno finalizzati a ridosso delle spedizioni, a cui mancano alcuni mesi.
• Noi saremo in grado di mandare le ricompense digitali esistenti e future a tutti coloro che hanno completato l’ordine regolarmente. Per esempio, se avete ordinato il PDF di Valraven, lo riceverete dopo il 10 Gennaio. Riceverete anche le preview e i file finali di Broken Tales non appena saranno pronti.
   

*OK APPREZZO IL TUO ENTUSIASMO, COSA DEVO FARE?*

• Controllate di nuovo che il vostro ordine sia a posto. Aggiungete o rimuovete articoli come vi pare ma fatelo prima del 10 gennaio. Una serie di persone non ha ancora compilato il sondaggio – non credo stiano leggendo ma sia messo agli atti che non possiamo garantire le stesse condizioni di spedizione se la deadline viene ignorata. 
• PER FAVORE controllate che la vostra carta di credito non sia scaduta. Se dovete aggiungere dei fondi, fatelo. Rincorrere i pagamenti falliti è incredibilmente fustrante e aggiunge un sacco di lavoro per me e il team.

Vi ricorderò di questa scadenza un paio di volte prima del 10 gennaio ma assicuratevi che il vostro ordine sia a posto – è importante che questo processo fili liscio in modo che il nostro focus rimanga sul gioco.

La Tesoreria dell’Ordine di The Broken Ones

Finora non abbiamo parlato tantissimo di The Broken Ones perché ci stavamo concentrando sul finire il Libro Base (fatto!). Eccovi un primo teaser di una delle sezioni di The Broken Ones, la prima espansione di Broken Tales (sì, ho detto prima).

Potete ancora aggiungere The Broken Ones al vostro ordine dallo stesso sondaggio Backerkit discusso qui sopra.

Nella sua spasmodica ricerca del controllo sulle Fiabe Spezzate, poco dopo la sua fondazione, l’Ordine ha costituito la Tesoreria. Nel Principato di Transilvania venne scelta la chiesa fortificata di Valea Viilor, che presentava una serie di camere segrete perfette per conservare oggetti e magie incomprensibili all’uomo comune. Un ordine di cavalieri fedeli al Papato presidia Valea Viilor affinché solo i Cacciatori possano entrare nelle sue sale segrete, dove ogni genere di artefatto viene accumulato e tenuto nascosto al mondo.

La Tesoreria dell’Ordine racchiude una serie di oggetti iconici che, come i Cacciatori e le Fiabe Spezzate, provengono dalla più svariate fiabe. Ogni Tesoro possiede una storia e conferisce a chi lo brandisce un Dono speciale.

Ci sono diversi modi per un Cacciatore di utilizzare un Tesoro dell’Ordine:

Per sostituire un Dono: un Cacciatore sceglie un Tesoro che sostituirà uno dei suoi due Doni e Descrittori base, riceverà quindi la possibilità di avvalersi del Tesoro per tutta la durata della Storia.

Come ricompensa Speciale spendendo Px alla fine di uno Scenario per farlo diventare una dotazione permanente del Cacciatore. A questo punto il Tesoro diviene un Descrittore e un Dono extra, il quarto per il Cacciatore.

Come requisito di Missione dell’Ordine: alcuni Scenari potrebbero richiedere come requisito l’uso di un Tesoro dell’Ordine, o il Narratore potrebbe concederlo come aiuto per un gruppo di Cacciatori esiguo, al pari del supporto di una Presenza Oscura di tipo Alleato. In questo caso i Cacciatori possono passarsi liberamente il Tesoro.

In qualunque modo vengano usati, i Tesori dell’Ordine sono un’ottima aggiunta nelle partite di Broken Tales, soprattutto per variare i Cacciatori pregenerati, aprendo la strada a nuovi assetti e combinazioni di capacità!

Cos’altro?

Stiamo lavorando ad un paio di succose preview del Libro Base, e le condivideremo il prima possibile. Stiamo cercando di avere la prima (giocabile) disponibile prima della fine dell’anno. Nessuna promessa ma dovremmo farcela!

Final Core Book Hunters

Four Hunters included in the Core Book were still left to unveil, so here we are.

Yukie Onn the Traveling Artist: A pale, beautiful stranger enticing whoever comes within the range of her melodious voice. Yukie serves the Order for a mysterious reason, and no one can resist her charm. Her flesh is as cold as ice, and only human blood can warm it...

Niklaus von Krampus: A wandering priest who dedicated his life to helping the poor and the needy. Niklaus has been a capable exorcist under the Papacy, but he subtly changed after a terrible battle with a demon. Could it be that the demon itself took his place?

Saint George the Dragon Slayer: George is a knight of renowned fame, and his skill is matched only by his zeal for hunting and eliminating monsters. But the Saint sees evil everywhere, and the Hunters are acting mighty strange...

The Immortal: The Immortal is a prisoner of the Order who committed a thousand and one crimes. As his name implies, he cannot be killed, but the Order holds him in its grip, knowing his greatest secret. Therefore, the Immortal must perform a thousand and one good actions to redeem his soul once and for all.
