Greetings, Broken Ones.
Another great campaign day went by: I want to thank all the people that are reaching out. It means a lot to us, and we’re trying to answer all your questions in a timely fashion. So if we haven’t got back to you yet, we will! One final note before we jump into the meat of the update: if you have a blog/channel/podcast and want to cover Broken Tales, we have a PRESS KIT HERE, or you can contact us, and if timezones allow we’ll set something up.
While the Story Engine Deck is useful to come up with story hooks, the Deck of World is promising to do the same for all your worldbuilding needs. I’m super excited about this, and I’m not saying it just because we’re collaborating – I’ve been using Peter’s stuff even in my professional work and the output was just fantastic. Nuff said, you know what to do.
I Will Stay with You Always
I love everything Oscar Wilde has ever written. The Happy Prince is definitely at the top of my personal “this story makes me cry” chart, and I wanted to write a version of it for Broken Tales. Here’s my current synopsis for it:
Ostromir Malý rules Prague for Frederick the Great, the city recently conquered after a siege. He has been forced to send a request for help to the Papacy as a streak of murders threatens a city already on its knees. A single killer is responsible for the plague of violence. All of the victims were members of the aristocracy and had been charged to rebuild the city after the siege. Each of them is found without a body part, but never the same one. The common thread that unites the killings is the phrase "I will stay with you always", written in blood on the walls of the rooms where this inhuman violence takes place. Ostromir is also troubled by the rumors he hears: the lower class, instead of being horrified by these inhuman acts, secretly approves of them. The Hunters are therefore called upon to reveal the identity of the serial killer who seems to have earned the favor (and protection?) of the common people of Prague.
You’ll have to play it to know how this connects to the original story, but some of you might have already noticed one or two interesting details.

Sherazade brings back already faced enemies in an attempt to stop the investigation into the Broken Ones.

Stiamo facendo il possibile per rispondere a tutti in tempi brevi, ma l’entusiasmo è tanto e le ore in un giorno troppo poche. Il Deck of Worlds
Peter Chiykowski, che gentilmente ha acconsentito a farci da ospite, lancerà il 18 Maggio una nuova campagna Kickstarter per il Deck of Worlds. Sono un backer entusiasta del precedente progetto di Peter, The Story Engine Deck, senza il quale tra l’altro questa collaborazione non sarebbe stata possibile (mi giunge voce che sarà possibile ottenerlo anche dalla nuova campagna).
Se lo Story Engine deck è utile per creare spunti di scrittura, il Deck of Worlds promette di fare lo stesso in ambito worldbuilding. Inutile dire che la cosa mi entusiasma, e non lo dico perché collaboriamo. Ho avuto modo di utilizzare i tool di Peter anche in ambito lavorativo, con eccellenti risultati. Ho detto abbastanza, e a questo punto sapete cosa fare.
Resterò per sempre con te
Mi piace tutto quello che Oscar Wilde ha scritto nel corso della sua vita. Il Principe Felice (linko l’originale perché molte traduzioni sono tagliate e adattate ad un pubblico infantile) è sicuramente nella mia top-3 delle “storie che mi fanno piangere”, e ho pensato che sarebbe un’ottima fiaba da riadattare per Broken Tales. Questa è la sinossi che ho in mente:
Ostromir Malý, reggente di Praga per conto di Federico II di Prussia dopo l’assedio della città, manda una richiesta di aiuto al Papato poiché nella città stremata si stanno consumando molteplici omicidi che sembrano perpetrati dalla stessa mano. Tutte le vittime fanno parte dell’aristocrazia incaricata di ricostruire la città dopo l’assedio, e vengono ritrovate sempre senza un pezzo di corpo, mai uguale. Il filo rosso che accomuna gli assassini è la frase “Starò con te per sempre”, scritta con il sangue sui muri delle stanze dove si consuma questa inumana violenza. Ostromir inoltre è molto perplesso dalle voci che girano: pare infatti che le classi meno abbienti, invece di mostrarsi inorridite da questi atti inumani, li approvino, pur evitando di esternare tale supporto alla luce del sole. I Cacciatori sono quindi chiamati a risolvere l’enigma del serial killer che sembra essersi guadagnato il favore (e la protezione?) della gente comune di Praga.
Ci dovrete giocare per capire il collegamento con la storia originale, ma i più attenti di voi potrebbero avere già un’indizio o due.
Resterò per sempre con te sarà incluso in The Broken Ones al raggiungimento di 800 backers.

Hello, Broken Ones, we meet again.
It’s been a fantastic Day 3 for the campaign, and I’m not crying, you are!
Anyway, we have someone to introduce.
Sun Wukong, the Trained Monkey
The next stretch goal is special, in the sense that when we discussed it at first I said to Alberto “...and we keep him for THE GRAND FINALE”. Needless to say, we’re very far from the grand finale, and we have a lot more in store for you going forward.
Sun Wukong is the protagonist of Journey to the West, a very popular 16th century Chinese Novel. At the very least you know Monkey through Dragonball; Goku is loosely based on him. Anyway, we’re going in a different direction with Broken Tales: Sun Wukong is trained in a circus and pretty grumpy about it too.
Here’s a work-in-progress drawing Daniel was so kind to prepare for us at an obscene hour.
New Social Goal!
We have a new Social Goal for the 800 backers milestone: I will write a Scenario (I Will Stay with You Always) based on The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde, something I have wanted to do since we came up with Broken Tales but always postponed. Someone who, bystanders say, can withstand a shower of bullets and seems as relentless as death itself...

È stato un fantastico Giorno 3 e non stiamo piangendo, abbiamo solo un bruscolino nell’occhio.
A parte questo, abbiamo qualcuno da presentarvi.
Sun Wukong, la Poderosa Scimmia
Il prossimo Stretch Goal è in qualche modo speciale, perché quando l’abbiamo discusso per la prima volta ricordo di aver detto ad Alberto “...e questo lo teniamo per il GRAN FINALE.” Inutile a dirsi, siamo molto distanti dal gran finale, e abbiamo un sacco di sorprese in serbo da qui alla fine della campagna.
Sun Wukong è il protagonista de Il viaggio in Occidente, il più famoso romanzo cinese del sedicesimo secolo. Sicuramente conoscerete Sun Wukong grazie a Dragonball: Goku è infatti basato proprio su di lui. In ogni caso, in Broken Tales andremo in una direzione diversa: Sun Wukong è una scimmia circense, non del tutto felice della sua occupazione.
Qui sotto vedete un work-in-progress che Daniel ha gentilmente preparato per l’occasione ad un’oscena ora della notte.
La Casa delle Rose
Mi sono accorto di aver dimenticato la traduzione nello scorso update, quindi eccovela. La Casa delle Rose è una Storia basata su La Bella e la Bestia di Beaumont ed è contenuta in The Broken Ones.
Stato Pontificio, padre Cristoforo è in servizio presso la comunità di Marta ha scritto al Papato per richiedere l’intervento di un gruppo di Cacciatori. Da qualche anno, l’ex convento abbandonato sull’isola Martana è divenuto dimora di un misterioso culto prendendo il nome di Casa delle Rose. Patrocinato dal ricco Dioniso Gonsalvus, erede della famiglia che da sempre dimora a Capo di Monte, cittadina sulle sponde del lago. Molte giovani ragazze delle zona si sono allontanate dalle proprie famiglie per recarsi sull’isola Martana, tagliando ogni contatto. Sembrerebbe che il culto sia guidato da una misteriosa sacerdotessa, ma l’accesso all’isola è vietato per conto della famiglia Gonsalvus. I Cacciatori devono recarsi a Capo di Monte per ottenere il permesso di accesso all’isola e poi capire cosa realmente accade.
Il Dovere di un Soldato
Il Dovere di un Soldato è una Storia basata su Il Soldatino di Stagno di Andersen ed è contenuta nel Libro Base.
I Cacciatori giungono a Borgholm, nella bellissima isola di Öland in Svezia. Il Riksråd, il gran concilio del regno di Svezia, ha contattato il Papato per richiedere l’intervento dei cacciatori. Sotto la richiesta di un ex eroe di guerra, tale Nils “il Povero Diavolo” che a scritto una lettera in cui chiede un accorato aiuto. Qualcuno sta uccidendo ad uno a uno i membri della guarnigione di cui faceva parte, sei valenti soldati sopravvissuti alla guerra tra Svezia e Russia. Qualcuno apparentemente in grado di incassare una salva di proiettili senza battere ciglio e dalle testimonianze, oscuro e implacabile come la morte stessa…
Nuovo Social Goal!

Hi, Broken Ones,
A new day has started in chilly Finland (yup, I’m based in Finland, and while there are no polar bears on the street, we recently had a wolf hanging around in Helsinki).
The first thing I want to show you is this awesome image of James’ Beast. If you read the Quickstart, you know that James can summon the Beast who ate his hand, using it to distract or wreck enemies, but then someone has to deal with it!
Initially, we had an onomatopoeia on the picture, saying “tic-tac,” the noise the alarm clock the beast allegedly swallowed makes in italian. Then we started thinking that tick-tock clocks make a different noise in English, for some reason. And because the paradox paralyzed us, we removed it altogether. So there you have it, the clock doesn’t tick anymore, at least for now.

Not the End
We’ve unlocked Claudio Serena’s Stretch Goal for the Feral Musicians of Bremen. Claudio is a veteran of the RPG Podcasting scene in Italy, and for a few years now also a successful author and publisher. He is co-author of Not the End, a game by Claudio Pustorino (they are all called Claudio, I know).
Long story short, this is an EXCEPTIONAL game, with a very innovative system based on tokens, and for these and many more reasons it also won Best Italian RPG of the Year in 2020.

The House of Roses
This is the synopsis for The House of Roses, a Scenario based on The Beauty and the Beast by Beaumont. It’s included in each copy of The Broken Ones.
Papal State. Father Cristoforo, ministering to the people of Marta, wrote to the Order to request the intervention of a group of Hunters. For some years now, the abandoned convent on the island of Martana has been the home of a mysterious cult calling themselves "the House of Roses". The cult seems sponsored by the wealthy Dionysus Gonsalvus, heir of a family that has always lived in Capo di Monte, a town on the shores of Lake Bolsena, enclosing the island of Martana. Many young girls from the area have left their families to go to the convent, cutting off all contact. Access to the island is prohibited on the orders of the Gonsalvus family. Hunters must go to Capo di Monte to obtain the permit to access the island and figure out what is really going on.

Buongiorno Infranti,
La giornata è iniziata bene nella fredda Finlandia (dove abito. No, non ci sono gli orsi polari, però di recente c’è stato un lupo per le strade di Helsinki).
La prima cosa che voglio mostrarvi è un’immagine della Bestia che segue Giacomo lo Spadaccino. Se avete letto il Quickstart, saprete che Giacomo può evocare la Bestia che gli ha mangiato una mano, ma poi deve anche sbarazzarsene!
Inizialmente, avevamo messo un’onomatopea che diceva “tic-tac”, il rumore che fanno le lancette della sveglia che la Bestia ha ingoiato ad un certo punto. Solo che in inglese le lancette fanno un rumore diverso, e quindi, paralizzati dal paradosso, abbiamo rimosso tutto. Quindi, almeno per il momento, la sveglia non fa alcun rumore.

Not the End
Abbiamo sbloccato lo Stretch Goal di Claudio Serena, i Feroci Musicanti di Brema. Claudio è un veterano del podcasting italiano di GdR con Fumble, e da qualche anno anche autore e publisher di successo. Assieme a Claudio Pustorino, è il co-autore di Not the End.
Senza dilungarci troppo, Not the End è un gioco ECCEZIONALE, con un sistema a gettoni molto innovativo. Per questo e altri ottimi motivi, ha vinto il premio per migliore GdR dell’anno nel 2020.

This will be the last update for today; it’s 11 PM where I am, and it’s been a loooong day. But do not despair; there will be more updates tomorrow (or you can despair, depending on how you feel about them).
In this update, we want to shed light on the design behind the Fox and the Cat, the exclusive double Hunter only campaign backers will get.
Furbizia Macchiavelli the Fox and Sornione Bischeri the Cat

Anote,before we begin: the names of these two characters are somewhat untranslatable because they are tied to historical figures of 13th-16th century Florence. By and large, they would sound like “Sly Cretin and Cunning Macchiavelli.” “Bischero” is pronounced as “bee-ske-ro.” The “E”in the second syllable is pronounced like the “E” in “Element.” For simplicity, let’s call them The Fox and the Cat for the time being. We should run a competition among English-speakers and see who can pronounce it better.
The Fox and the Cat are two of Pinocchio's most iconic and bizarre villains. These bad guys are willing to do anything to get food in their mouths: they have no qualms about trying to murder Pinocchio in the original version of the story. In bringing this wretched couple to their breaking point, I overturned the most basic concept: fake friends. Their blatant cruelty was so widely recognized that they are at the center of more than one proverb. Sornione and Furbizia are genuine friends, and perhaps something more too. However, they are destined not to be able to share their bond. Cursed by a witch, the two are forced to switch their human form at the beginning and end of the day, one becoming the animal companion of the other. The concept of "good for nothing" remains with that of "knowing how to get by", making up most of their Gifts. Everything is seasoned with a romantic undertone that can make these two villains more "heroic" than many other Hunters, in open contrast with their natural (mean) nature!
The player using the Fox and the Cat will control a Hunter that “switches” at sundown and sunrise, always accompanied by an animal companion.

Sornione Bischeri il Gatto e Furbizia Macchiavelli la Volpe

Il Gatto e la Volpe sono due dei cattivi più iconici e bislacchi di Pinocchio. Dei poco di buono disposti a tutto per qualcosa da mangiare, e che nella versione originale della storia non si fanno nessuno scrupolo arrivando al tentato omicidio nei confronti del povero burattino. Nel portare questa meschina coppia al loro punto di rottura ho ribaltato il più basilare dei concetti: quello dei “falsi amici”, tanto popolare da divenire un vero e proprio modo di dire della tradizione popolare. Sornione e Furbizia sono davvero amici, forse anche di più, ma destinati a non poter condividere ciò che li unisce. Per colpa di una maledizione i due sono costretti ad alternare la loro forma umana di giorno e di notte, diventando uno il compagno animale dell’altro. Rimane il concetto di poco di buono, del sapersi arrangiare e del vivere di espedienti che compongono i loro Doni, ma il tutto è condito da un sottofondo romantico che può rendere questi due furfanti più “eroici” di tanti altri Cacciatori, in aperto contrasto con la loro vera natura meschina!
Il giocatore che userà il Gatto e la Volpe si troverà quindi a controllare un Cacciatore che cambia al calare e al sorgere del sole, e che ha sempre con sè un compagno animale.

Scenario Synopsis
All the Scenarios are already mapped out, so we thought this would be a good time to share some of the synopsis of what you’re going to find in both the Core Book and The Broken Ones. We’ll start with three that might be already familiar to our newsletter’s subscribers, and we’ll continue in the next updates with some we have not discussed yet. The following three are all included in the Broken Tales Core Book:
Red-Hood Iskra (Inspired by Red Riding Hood)
The Durfort village's surroundings in France are the hunting grounds of dangerous and feral beasts. Gerard Dubois, a local nobleman who recently married Elizaveta of Volinia, is desperate for help. Unable to keep the villagers' fears at bay, he writes a letter to the Papacy because "the beasts afflicting the Gevudan area are something outside of the grace of God." A group of Hunters is sent to investigate…

The City of Pigs (Inspired by the Three Little Pigs)
The industrious city of Whitehaven is prospering under the guidance of Bardolf Greed, a wealthy tycoon who invested his fortunes in the extraction of coal, employing most of the population in the nearby mines. Green pays little and treats his workers terribly. His exploitative methods have led to the rise of an anarchic group called The Pig Heads, named for the macabre masks they use to hide their identities. After a ruthless campaign of kidnappings and murders, Bardolf has begun to fear the night. He writes to the Order, relying on them to shine a light of hope in the dark galleries beneath Whitehaven.
Of Flesh and Wood (Inspired by Pinocchio)
The Hunters reach Sinalunga, a small town in the grand duchy of Tuscany. Not far from the village, inside an old well, a pile of mutilated corpses has been found. Disappearances in the area have been frequent for years, and now they all seem to have an answer. The Papacy, determined to find out what really happened, fears that an old ritual to animate inert matter could be behind the murders…

Sinossi delle Storie
Praticamente tutte le Storie di Broken Tales esistono già almeno nel concetto, quindi vogliamo condividere con voi quelle che troverete sia nel Libro Base che in The Broken Ones. Partiamo con tre che saranno già note a chi segue la nostra newsletter, e passeremo a quelle inedite nei prossimi update. Queste che seguono sono tutte incluse nel Libro Base:
Iskra dal Cappuccio Rosso (Cappuccetto Rosso - Perrault)
Nei pressi del villaggio di Durfort, Gevaudan in Francia, si aggirano delle pericolose e feroci bestie. Il nobile Gerard Dubois, fresco di nozze con l’avvenente Elizaveta di Volinia è ormai disperato dalle continue richieste da parte della popolazione. Incapace di gestire la paura dei cittadini, Gerard scrive di proprio pugno una lettera al Papato, un plico riservato all’Ordine, poiché come si legge dalle parole vergate da una tremante mano: “Le bestie che stanno affliggendo il Gevaudan sono qualcosa che si muove al di fuori della grazia di Dio”.Un gruppo di Cacciatori dell’Ordine viene quindi inviato al villaggio di Durfort per scoprire cosa stia accadendo veramente…
La Città dei Maiali (I Tre Porcellini - James Orchard Halliwell Philipps)
L’operosa cittadina di Whitehaven sta conoscendo una nuova vita, sotto la guida del ricco industriale Bardolf Greed, che ha investito la sua fortuna nell’estrazione del carbon fossile impiegando buona parte della popolazione nel lavoro alla grande miniera vicino alla città. Ma ben presto le accuse di sfruttamento e di salari da fame ha dato vita a un gruppo anarchico denominato le Teste di Verro, per via delle macabre maschere con cui coprono il volto. Tra sparizioni, sanguinosi sacrifici e figure che si muovono nella notte, Bardolf si è rivolto all’Ordine per portare una luce di speranza nelle buie e profonde gallerie che corrono sotto Whitehaven.
Di Carne e Legno (Pinocchio - Collodi)
I Cacciatori giungono a Sinalunga, un piccolo paese del Granducato di Toscana dove è stata fatta una raccapricciante scoperta. Poco distante dal paese, un vecchio pozzo è stato riesumato e al suo interno, dieci cadaveri mutilati hanno dato una risposta alle tante sparizioni che negli anni hanno reso la zona protagonista di macabre storie e racconti. Il Papato, deciso a fare chiarezza sull’accaduto, teme che dietro alle sparizioni si celi un’antica pratica esoterica che permette di animare la materia inerte tramite il sacrificio di anime innocenti.
